A Kentucky Couple Photoshoot & Tribute to My Mentor

Updated: Jun 27, 2023

This being my first shoot of my second year as an official photographer, I figured it deserved its own blog post. This session was made almost entirely possible by my previous mentor, Taylor and so I also had to write this as a bit of a tribute to her. That, and also the fact that I had to show off Meghan and Andrew absolutely killing this photoshoot despite it being a solid 38 degrees outside on a rooftop at sunset:

When Meghan showed up in an elegant cocktail dress and fur coat, with her long-time boyfriend, Andrew, dressed in a matching black suit, I knew we were going to have so much fun at their photoshoot. Many couples ask me what they should wear but Meghan didn't need any guidance; and she did not disappoint when she and Andrew met us at Hotel Covington.

At Hotel Covington, there is an elegant, editorial vibe that matched so perfectly with these two. With an evening cocktail and a rooftop sunset, Meghan and Andrew were able to just be in the moment, having eyes for only each other.

At the time, my photographer friend, Taylor Thompson, had been taking me under her wing and suggested I start off by shadowing her. As it was literally January - the ultimate slow season for us photographers, I immediately jumped at the chance to whip out my old camera. I ended up helping Taylor with posing and creative shots and we chatted a lot of business ideas, too.

Having a mentor in any field can be incredibly valuable, but when it comes to photography, it can make all the difference in the world. As a photographer, you're constantly learning new techniques and refining your skills, but having a mentor can give you guidance, inspiration, and support that can accelerate your growth and development.

Taylor has been all of that and more to me. After experiencing my first "slow-season", as us photographers like to call it, I reached out to a few photographers, seeking advice - Taylor was one of the few who responded and invited me to begin shadowing her. She's now moving to Tampa, Florida later this summer but I am forever grateful to her for helping me get my foot in the door.

Much love,

ree
